SMS Terms

1. Service Overview

  • Kiwi VoIP provides a Business Messaging Number that allows you to:

    • Send SMS messages to New Zealand mobile numbers.

    • Receive SMS messages from New Zealand mobile numbers.

  • The service is delivered over our secure New Zealand infrastructure.

  • The service is not linked to a SIM card.

2. Pricing

2.1 Monthly Service Charge

  • Each Business Messaging Number costs $7.00 + GST per month.

  • Charged in advance, pro-rated if activated mid-billing cycle.

2.2 Outbound SMS Charges

  • Outbound SMS are charged at $0.15 + GST per SMS, per recipient.

  • A “message” is defined as follows:

GSM-7 encoding (standard text – English, numbers, symbols):

  • Up to 160 characters = 1 SMS.

  • More than 160 characters are split into blocks of 153 characters, with each block counted and charged as 1 SMS.

    • Example: a 300-character SMS = 2 messages charged ($0.30).

UCS-2 encoding (messages with special characters, e.g. emoji, Chinese, Te Reo macrons):

  • Up to 70 characters = 1 SMS.

  • More than 70 characters are split into blocks of 67 characters, with each block counted and charged as 1 SMS.

    • Example: a 150-character message with emoji = 3 messages charged ($0.45).

Multiple recipients:

  • If a single message is sent to multiple recipients, each copy is charged separately.

    • Example: 1 message to 10 recipients = 10 × $0.15 = $1.50.

2.3 Inbound SMS Charges

  • Inbound SMS are free of charge up to 1,000 per Business Messaging Number, per month.

  • If you expect to exceed this limit, additional charges may apply (price on application).

2.4 Other Notes

  • Long messages are reassembled by the recipient’s device but charged in full per segment.

  • Delivery reports (DLRs), MMS, and SMPP are not supported.

  • Outbound messaging is subject to rate limits:

    • 100 messages per hour

    • 500 messages per day

3. Fair Use & Restrictions

You agree not to use the service for:

  • Sending spam or unsolicited marketing.

  • Premium or charge-back SMS services.

  • Reselling third-party content.

  • Any unlawful, harmful, offensive, or misleading communication.

Outbound messages are limited to:

  • 100 per hour and 500 per day (per number).

  • All outbound messages are subject to automated fraud checks.

4. Message Handling

  • Standard SMS supports up to 160 characters per message (longer messages are split and counted as multiple SMS).

  • SMS containing special characters (e.g. emoji or non-Latin scripts) support up to 70 characters per message (longer messages are split).

  • Inbound SMS delivery is highly reliable but not 100% guaranteed.

5. Customer Responsibilities

  • You are responsible for all use of your account and ensuring no unauthorised access.

  • You must comply with all New Zealand laws, including the Privacy Act 2020 and anti-spam regulations.

  • You indemnify Kiwi VoIP for any loss resulting from misuse of the service.

6. Privacy

  • We collect and handle personal information in line with our Privacy Policy.

  • By using this service, you consent to us handling personal information required to deliver the service.

7. Service Changes & Termination

  • Pricing or terms may change with at least 30 days’ notice.

  • You may cancel your service with 30 days’ written notice.

  • All fees up to the date of cancellation remain payable.
