Kiwi VoIP began in Opunake, a small town on the Taranaki coast. Three founders — Nick and Rach Lawson and Nick’s father Philip — two branded cars, and a belief that New Zealand businesses were paying far too much for their phones. Philip is no longer with us, and a good deal of how we do things came from him.
It started earlier than that, really. In 1998 Nick was working in IT for a large corporate and somebody handed him the phone system to look after. That is genuinely how it began — not a business plan, just the job nobody else wanted.
It turned into a career that has taken him around the world installing phone systems, including the first system on the Kupe gas project just up the road in Taranaki, and the phones that gave the residents of the Pitcairn Islands working mobile and landline service. Fifty-odd people, one of the most remote inhabited places on earth, and they can pick up a phone.
The company was founded in 2007. Nearly twenty years later we have offices in Auckland, Christchurch and Gisborne, and we still take on the sites other providers say are too hard. The small-town start is a large part of why.
Thirteen seconds on average, measured on our own system in 2026. Not a portal, not a queue, not an offshore call centre. If we cannot do that, we do not deserve the account.
Everything we sell is month to month. Most of the industry locks customers in for two years and charges to leave. We would rather earn it every month.
We regularly tell customers the cheaper plan suits them better, or that they do not need the thing they rang about. It costs us money in the short run and it is the reason people stay.
Ours are on the website, including the rates most providers bury. If you have to ring to find out what something costs, that usually tells you something.
3CX, as a Platinum Partner with Advanced Certified engineers. We host it, configure it, and watch it. See 3CX.
Local numbers, 0800 and 0508, word numbers, and porting. For businesses and for households.
Fibre and HyperFibre for business and home, plus phone service over Starlink for rural sites.
On both the Spark and 2degrees networks, so you can pick whichever has coverage where you actually work.
A monitoring centre we built ourselves, checking every system we host every 30 seconds. See how it works.
Replacing systems nobody else will touch, rural sites where the copper has gone, and businesses other providers have given up on.
Schools and kura, medical centres and pharmacies, transport and logistics firms, wineries and packhouses, builders and contractors, marae, motels, vets and retailers. Businesses from one person to several hundred extensions.
A lot of them are rural or provincial, which is why we put real effort into making phone service work over Starlink and fixed wireless rather than only selling to people already on fibre.
3/14 Airborne Road, Albany. Our head office.
3/75 Peterborough Street, Christchurch Central.
760 Childers Road.
We service the whole country, from Kaitaia to Bluff and out to the Chathams. The offices are where we are based, not where our customers have to be.
Still family owned. Nick looks after the phone systems, Rach looks after everything that actually matters.
Handed a phone system to look after in 1998 and never handed it back. Has installed systems around the world, from Taranaki to the Pitcairn Islands.
Co-founder, and our admin and accounts manager. Rach runs a team, keeps the whole thing running day to day, and keeps Nick in line.
Nick’s father, and the third of the three who started the company in Taranaki. Philip passed away a few years ago. The business he helped start carries on.
